CUT OFF
One year-long project
(2015)
CUT OFF is a project that explores the reality of homelessness through a simple yet powerful medium: the cardboard sign. I’ve always been struck by how something so ordinary can carry so much meaning. Long associated with those living on the streets, the sign becomes a symbol of visibility, resilience, and the human voice often ignored. Rather than framing homelessness as a one-sided story of need, I see this work as a way to call for equality, empathy, and engagement. It’s not about spectacle — it’s about noticing what’s already there.
This project also makes me reflect on how we choose to look at others. Sometimes we stare, sometimes we look away, but the choice is always ours. These signs quietly interrupt that choice.
They remind me how easily people are pushed into shame-filled spaces, where even asking for help comes with an apology.
CUT OFF isn’t about offering answers, it’s about making space to recognise someone’s presence, and to reconsider how we relate to one another in the everyday.
